Got the idea from this chart:
http://time.com/82375/every-execution-in-u-s-history-in-a-single-chart/

Found this page:
http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/executions-us-1608-2002-espy-file?scid=8&did=269
that mentions where to get the data:
www.icpsr.umich.edu/NACJD
(click 'download data' and search for '8451')
select: Executions in the United States, 1608-2002: The ESPY File (ICPSR 8451)
download the 'SAS' version of the data.
unzip the tar file
and it will have the sas dataset in transport (xpt) format
08451-0001-Data.xpt

My version goes back an extra 100 years (1600, rather than 1700).
And I label more years along the x-axis (I think it's useful to have a label ~1975, for example).
