In general, it is usually a good practice to keep graphs simple.

But you don't want to simplify them so much that they actually
lose some of the analytic information & visual cues that the 
user might rely on.

The first map loses the geographical positioning of many states
(for example, South Dakota is to the east of North Dakota in this map).

The 2nd map is somewhat better, but users still cannot recognize some
of the states by shape.

The 3rd map is the typical/simple US state map, and is my preference.
